How did you celebrate New Year’s Eve? I went out with friends and had a wonderful time. You know my protocol for bars usually includes drinking water or diet coke. This time, I made the decision to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a champagne toast.
Part of this decision came from peer pressure — the drink was given to me. Another part of this decision came from a phrase my dietitian used in an email once. “It’s about being in charge, not about being in control.” I decided to have champagne to celebrate.
From a nutrition standpoint, alcohol is a form of empty calories. This champagne was around 80 calories, and it provides no nutritive value to the body. As a food choice, it was a terrible decision. Overall, I think it was the right decision.
